Week 3 Discussion Question:

When Eshan Khan came with Iqbal from the Liberation Front, he took the children to freedom.  Reread page 84-85 where Fatima looks back at Hussain Khan's factory as they drove away and thought, "After the bend in the road, the workshop disappeared, but that little bathroom window of almonds, open sky, and hope would stay with me forever." Talk about how the kids must be feeling, and what Fatima means.

  1. I think the kids are thinking “what am I going to do now?” or “what's going to happen to me?” I think this is what they are thinking because they all were silent and before they left the factory they were all wondering “what would they do if they made it out of the carpet factory?”

I think Fatima means that hope will always stay with her when she says: "After the bend in the road, the workshop disappeared, but that little bathroom window of almonds, open sky, and hope would stay with me forever." I think this because almost every morning Fatima would look out the window and try to reach the top of the window. Also I think the window meant hope to Fatima because it was the only way to escape.

  2. I think the kids are kind of anxious and scared of whats going to happen next. "What are we going to do now?". They dont know if their parents are alive or if they're dead. Fatima will always remember the window as a way to be free and hope. When it got closed off I can only imagine how she felt. She will always remember that small window of hope and freedom but it might remind her of those terrible times in the carpet factory.

  3. I think that the kids are in shock. They thought that they would never leave that nightmare they lived but now they are watching the house disappear as they drive away. All they now is to work but now they are free. They are scared because they do not know what to do. They don't know where their families are. Fatima is trying to say that she would never forget the good things about the carpet factory.

  4. I think that she means that she will remember her hope for escaping because, I read that everyday, she would reach for the window and try to look out at the open sky, but she probably felt like she was as small as an almond with not being able to reach.

I think that the other kids felt happy that they left the carpet factory and didn't have to make any more carpets or get sent to the Tomb for a mistake they made, accident or not, they might get punished for it, such as, when Iqbal cut his carpet right in half with his knife purposely, or when Salmon accidentally broke a water pitcher; both resulted with a trip to the Tomb. They wouldn't need to risk it anymore.

  5. The kids must be feeling FREEDOM but also scared because some of them had been there for 3 or more years. They must also be saying “where would I go and if I do go home will my family give me away again?”.

I think Fatima is saying that the small window shaped like an almond gave her hope and that it kept her going. If the window was not there she would give up hope and Iqbal would not have been able to escape the first time.

  6. I think the kids are scared what will happen to them, and curious what will happen.I think Fatima means courage, because everyday she would try and reach the window to escape. And each day she would think to her self that she would get out that's courage.

  8. I think that all the children including Fatima feel like there clueless of what to do now that they have been rescued from Hussian Khan. He was the person that feed them, took "good" care of them, and was sheltering them. Now that they have been let out of the factory they dont know what to do with themselves.but now that they have been asked to stay with Eshan Khan they dont just sit there useless. When Fatima says that she means that place will always be in her mind every day. She will never forget that "little bathroom window of almonds, open sky and hope" because she grew up there.

  9. I think that the kids that used to work in that carpet factory are scared because they might not have anymore parents or don’t remember where there home town is because they have forgotten over the years that they have been in the carpet factory. Also they might be scared by being in the carpet factory for three or more years that they are so used to life in the carpet factory that when they are free they still think that they are still in a carpet factory, like when Fatima woke up the next morning. They also feel freedom because they can go almost wherever they want because they aren’t limited by a master. They have freedom because they can go fly a kite or go to the movies. They are also happy because they have the opportunity to go back to their families, if they can remember their home village. But if they can’t remember their home village, it will take time for them to find their families.

  10. Iqbal shows bravery because from ripping the valuable carpet because he could’ve been in the tomb for more than two days.He also shows bravery when he runs away from the carpet factory.Salman shows courage when he tells Fatima not to move when the mistress is looking straight at her when they were feeding Iqbal in the tomb.I think bravery is the same as courage because bravery is where you’re not afraid of to do something dangerous, but courageous is where you have faith or you believe that you can do it.I’ve been brave when I was six and me my cousins and my brother and sister were at a lake in Sequoia National Park, California. We were swimming and then my uncle was drowning and then when he got out of the water I showed him how it was done and jumped into to the deep part of the lake and didn’t drown.

  11. The kid’s are probably happy because hussain khan went to jail and they are free but are scared because they don’t no what to do and where to go, and that little bathroom window of almonds, open sky, and hope would stay with me forever means that even though fatima has nowhere to go that she still has hope that she will reunite with her family.
